Aluminum Boat Building Welder

I am building a 44 ft sailboat (all aluminum) and can reach every place without having to move the welder. the hull material is the 5086-h116 and the 1lbs. wire spools are 5356 alloy. the welder easily welds 3/8" material with .047 dia wire while the .035 wire works very nicely on 1/4" or 3/16" plate.. You can weld up a trailer for a 2000 lb boat with a lincoln 135-t (about $400.00).... just, and do stainless, aluminum, and mild steel. but welding aluminum with a mig is a real challenge if looks matter.. Hobart as well as stephen pollard in his book boatbuilding with aluminum recommends using 5356 for welding 5082 and 5086 aluminum alloy which is the standard alloy for aluminum boat building. however 5356 is not available locally so i learned with 4043 which is commonly used for 5052 and the softer 6000 series aluminum alloys.. I think building boats in the miracle metal is the most enjoyable boat building there is. my goal is to support the glen-l builders that are interested in building the designs in this fine catalog, by mr.'s witt and hankinson, in aluminum; to produce the best boats they can..
